You will find several prompts on how to write a professional CV and a sample document.
There is no appropriate template suggesting how to write a CV. However, such a document has to comply with the following conditions:
- Firstly, a CV, in order to serve its purpose, has to be informative. Such a document should give a reader all necessary information about a candidate.
- Write it in a concise and clear way, particularly paying attention to completing information about your previous employers, industry, type of activity which they do, information about positions you held, giving the name of a position and the scope of the duties performed.
- Give a full date of commencing and finishing work or education.
- When giving information on knowing foreign languages, specify the level you are at related to each language.
- Make sure that the contact data, which you have given, make a potential employer get in touch with you even after a longer time.
- Insert your permanent e-mail address, a stationary phone number or possibly your relatives' phone number. Frequent changes of a mobile phone number have deprived many candidates of a chance of meeting an employer.
- Your CV should be legible. When you prepare it, follow the rule: maximum information, minimum words.
Eliminate unnecessary words and sentences in order to display essential information. Give information in such a way that the recruiting persons could know what qualifications and experience you have. Convey information in the form of sentence equivalents, in a concise and possibly simple way.
See a form providing a sample CV and comments. You can fill it in and save as your future professional CV.
A cover letter
A cover letter should give an employer a reason why they should choose you and inform what you expect from a future workplace. If you completed your CV thoroughly, there should appear all necessary information describing your professional qualifications. You also need to specify your expectations and preferences towards job positions or even workplace locations.
A cover letter will serve this purpose mentioned in the previous sentence. Mention job positions which are of interest to you and mark if you take into consideration a possible change of place of residence. If you apply for a position advertised in the media, give information about which recruitment this job advertisement concerned.
In a cover letter you can also try to persuade an employer that it is you who they seek. Give reasons why you should hold this job position and why in their company. Enumerate qualifications which predispose you to this job. Remember that only information supported by arguments or examples will be taken into consideration.
When you write about organisational or communicative skills, give examples when you took advantage of your skills successfully. You can also write about your professional achievements related to work in the offered job position. At the end of the letter encourage a recruiting person to invite you for an interview.
